Chocolate Icing

Recipe Yields:
Icing for one 9-inch layer cake

This is an easy, smooth, chocolate icing. It isn't too sweet or too rich. It is a perfect, all purpose chocolate icing. It is divine with the yellow cake!


  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup confectioners sugar


  1. Melt butter and chocolate chips in the top of a double boiler.
  2. Stir in milk.
  3. Add vanilla.
  4. Stir in sugar.
  5. Chill mixture for 45 minutes, and then beat with an electric mixer.
  6. Chill mixture for 15 minutes, and beat with an electric mixer again.
  7. Continue the last step 4 or 5 more times until icing is thick enough to spread.
